History of the Wanaka Tree
The Wanaka Tree has been a feature in Wanaka for hundreds of years. Around 80 years ago there was a fence placed around the shore line to stop people from getting on to the tree to stop touching the tree and damaging it. The tree really took of in 2014 when a photographer from Christchurch Dennis Radermacher took a photo of the tree on a misty day in June and was given the award for best photo of the year. Today people fly from all over the world to take photos of the tree which help Wanaka’s tourism industry a lot.
